Local favourites Walsall Jazz Orchestra have been named as winners of the recent Rush Hour Blues audience poll. Selected by those who know best – Birmingham’s jazz fans – the Orchestra triumphed over stiff competition to be chosen as the favourite act out of the 40 bands that performed in Rush Hour Blues in 2008.

Director of WJO, John Hughes, commented:

“Winning was a big surprise and a great boost to the band’s morale. We have worked hard at trying to produce a contemporary feel in our music, using jazz standards alongside original rock-oriented compositions. It certainly seems that the move from the known to the unknown has paid off. I am delighted for all the musicians and composers involved, and to be chosen by a local audience has made it even more rewarding.”

This year’s award is of particular significance as it marks the 5th anniversary of the Rush Hour Blues sessions, which started in early 2004. The series, which is run by Town Hall and Symphony Hall in conjunction with Birmingham Jazz, features an eclectic range of acts in relaxed surroundings and has become an essential part of the City’s musical fabric, attracting over 400 people per week.

Come and see our fantastic poll winners on Foyer Level 3 of Symphony Hall, from 5.30pm – 7.00pm on Friday 27 March 2009. Admission free.
