RIBA Awards 2008 - Town Hall short-listed

Town Hall Birmingham has been short-listed for a prestigious national architectural award. Fourteen West Midlands’ projects are on the Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA) 2008 short-list, the highest number in RIBA’s history.

RIBA praised the £35 million refurbishment of the Grade 1 listed Town Hall, saying that it had brought a well-loved building back into public use making it able to meet the demands of the 21st century. Designed by architects Urban Design, and Rodney Melville and Partners, the refurbishment was funded by Birmingham City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.

The RIBA Awards are presented annually to the buildings in the UK that best show architectural excellence and the winners will be announced at the end of May.

Other West Midlands buildings short-listed include Fort Dunlop, Beetham Tower, a Khoury Architects designed family home in Handsworth Wood, the Pop Art wing at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the new library at King’s School, Worcester and the extension at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.
