“Das ist sehr gut!” was the enthusiastic verdict of Sir Simon Rattle, Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, during a flying visit to take his first look at Town Hall Birmingham after its restoration and refurbishment.

Sir Simon, who was in Birmingham to conduct a concert at Symphony Hall on Friday evening (19 Dec), recalled the years from 1980-91 when he was in charge of the CBSO and was astounded to see the changes that have been made in restoring the famous old Hall to its 1834 configuration.

“The view from the platform is so different from what it was in my time. I think it all looks magnificent,” he told Andrew Jowett, Director of Town Hall and Symphony Hall, and he congratulated the City upon having two such fine places of entertainment. “Birmingham has done it again!” he concluded cheerily, before making off to his rehearsal in Symphony Hall.
