ELGAR'S TROMBONE

Elgar’s own trombone will feature in performances of the composer’s The Dream of Gerontius at Town Hall Birmingham on Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 November. The instrument, which is usually housed at the Royal College of Music museum, will be played by Sue Addison, principal trombone of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Elgar apparently took up the trombone in 1900 (the year that Gerontius was premiered in Town Hall Birmingham) but, according to his friend Dora Penny, “he didn’t do it very well … and I got into such a state of hysterics that I didn’t know what to do”

Jeffrey Skidmore conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment – who specialise in performances using instruments of the period – and his own choir, Ex Cathedra.
